Costume Contest Guidelines:
This is a craftsmanship contest, therefore contestants are expected to make their costumes. No 100% purchased or commissioned costumes will be eligible for any awards. If a contestant has
purchased all of their costume they may be allowed to just walk the contest for show purposes only and is up to the discretion of the convention staff. Percent of what is made progresses with each skill level category.
Novice: Contestant is brand new to cosplay, has never entered a competition before, and has less than 2 awards for craftsmanship or skits from a nationally recognized contest. Contestant could be asked to bump up if skill level presents itself as higher than a beginner. Expectation: up to 50% made.
Journeyman: Contestant has entered competition and earned no more than 2 awards for craftsmanship or skits from a nationally recognized contest, shows proficiency in a particular form of work (armor, sewing, creative design, etc.) or has performed on stage as a model. Contestant could be asked to bump up if skill level presents itself as advanced. Expectation: 60-70% made, more than one skill set used or very proficient in one skill set, clean work everywhere.
Masters: Contestant shows advanced proficiency in costume design and craftsmanship, has earned more than 3 awards, shows advanced proficiency in a particular form of work (armor, sewing, creative design, etc.) and choreographed their own performances on stage. And/or they have won a previous award in any category other than Novice at this convention. Expectation: 75-100% made, multiple skill sets shown, or perfectly clean in one skill set, costume should be as skillfully represented in all skill sets present, clean from top to bottom, inside and out. No penalties for shoes not made of course but bonus if they do!
Needlework: Contestant has experience and proficiency in sewing/serging; and their costume is primarily made up of fabric/cloth. Extensive detail will be considered in this niche category designed for the best of tailors and seamstresses. Expectations: very clean work inside and out, including tailoring, patterning, fit, including hems, seams, finish work.
Super Size: For costumes that are large and in charge. This category is for costumes that are oversized, including armor if applicable. If it has trouble fitting through a doorway, is bulky and cumbersome enough to require a handler, or just has trouble with moving parts in general, this is the category for you. Expectations: very clean work inside and out, including seams, finishes, paint work, patterning, mobility should be good, inside should also be clean.
